Northern Sky

Terms of Use

Effective September 5, 2026

Northern Sky is a subscription. The first week is free, you can cancel anytime through Apple, and if it ends you keep reading everything you wrote.

These are the terms between you and Brian Meise, who makes Northern Sky, for using the app and this website. By using either, you agree to them. They are written plainly on purpose; the plain reading is the intended one.

The app

Northern Sky is a morning check-in for iPhone. Each morning it asks whether you did yesterday's one thing, what today's one thing is, and what you are thankful for, and it keeps what you wrote. You may use it for your own personal purposes, on devices signed in to your Apple Account, under Apple's own terms for apps from the App Store. Apple's standard licence agreement applies where these terms are silent.

The subscription

Using Northern Sky requires a subscription, bought through the App Store. Two plans are offered: a monthly plan and a yearly plan. The price for each is shown in the app before you buy, in your local currency; the monthly plan is about two dollars a month and the yearly plan about ten dollars a year, though the exact figure is whatever the App Store shows you.

When it ends

If your subscription ends, you are never locked out of what you wrote. The app opens, every past entry stays readable, and your export still works. What you lose is the morning: no new entries until you subscribe again. Your entries on our servers stay until you delete your account.

Your entries

What you write is yours. We claim no rights in it, we do not use it to train anything, and we do not show it to anyone. We store it and copy it between your devices because that is what the app is for, and only for that. You can export it or delete it at any time from Settings. Deleting your account removes your entries from our servers immediately and permanently; please export first if you want to keep them.

You are responsible for what you write, and for keeping your own device and sign-in secure. Use the app only for yourself and not in a way that breaks any law, harms anyone, or interferes with the service.

Your account

An account is optional and is offered after your first morning. It exists so your entries survive a lost or replaced phone. One person, one account. You can sign out, and you can delete the account from Settings, at any time. Our privacy policy says exactly what an account stores.

What we promise, and what we don't

We work to keep Northern Sky working, available, and honest about itself. But it is software made by one person, offered as it is, and we cannot promise it will be free of faults or available every minute. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from using it or being unable to use it, and our total liability to you is limited to what you paid for the subscription in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here limits rights the law gives you that cannot be limited.

Northern Sky is a habit and a journal. It is not medical, psychological, or professional advice of any kind.

Ending or changing the service

We may change the app, and we may stop offering it. If we stop, we will say so in advance in the app and give you time to export your entries. If these terms change in a way that matters, we will say so in the app before the change takes effect and update the date above.

We may close an account that is used to abuse the service or other people, or that breaks these terms. We will tell you why, and your entries remain exportable.

Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York and the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and any dispute will be heard in the courts there, unless the law where you live gives you the right to something else.
