Privacy Policy
Effective September 5, 2026
Northern Sky stores what you write in it, and the email address you sign in with, so that your entries are safe and follow you to a new phone. Nothing is sold, nothing is shown to advertisers, and you can delete all of it from inside the app.
Northern Sky is made by Brian Meise, one person. This policy says what the app and this website collect, where it goes, who else handles it, and what you can do about it. It is written to be read, not skimmed; if anything in it is unclear, write to northernskyapp@gmail.com.
What the app stores
Your entries. Each morning you write a commitment, answer whether you kept yesterday's, and write something you're thankful for. Those words, the yes or no, and the date they belong to are the app's whole content. They are saved on your phone first, and, once you have an account, copied to our server so they survive a lost or replaced phone.
Your account. If you create an account, we store the email address you signed in with and an identifier from the sign-in provider you used (Apple, Google, or an email link). With Sign in with Apple you can choose to hide your email; the relay address Apple gives us works the same as a real one and we never see the original.
Your settings. Your time zone, the time you asked to be reminded, and the praise word you chose. If you told us how you heard about Northern Sky, that answer too.
Your subscription. Whether your subscription is in its free week, active, or ended, and when it renews. We never see your payment details; Apple handles the purchase.
That is the list. There are no photos, no location, no contacts, no health data, no advertising identifier, and no analytics library watching how you use the app.
What stays on your phone
Everything you write is on your phone whether or not you have an account. Reminders are local notifications scheduled by the app itself; no push service is involved, and the reminder text never leaves the device. The app works fully offline, and a morning with no connection is still a morning.
If you use the app without an account, none of your entries reach our servers at all.
Who else handles it
We keep the list of companies short and use each one for one job.
- Supabase runs the database and sign-in service that hold your account and entries. Your rows are protected so that only your own signed-in session can read or change them. Supabase also sends the sign-in link when you sign in by email. Supabase's privacy policy.
- Apple handles Sign in with Apple, the App Store purchase, and the subscription itself. Apple tells us the status of your subscription and nothing about your payment method. Apple's privacy policy.
- Google handles sign-in if you choose Continue with Google. We receive your email address and an identifier, nothing else from your Google account. Google's privacy policy.
- RevenueCat keeps track of subscription status across your devices and gives us plain numbers about how many people start a free week, subscribe, and cancel. It sees your account identifier and your subscription events, not your entries. RevenueCat's privacy policy.
- An email service sends the occasional note we write about Northern Sky, to people who gave us their address for that. We use Resend for this. Resend's privacy policy.
None of them are allowed to use your data for their own purposes. Nobody else gets it: no advertisers, no data brokers, no "partners".
When you sign in by email link, the address is used to send that link. When you give us your address on this website, it is used to tell you when Northern Sky is out and, occasionally, what has changed since. Every note has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing is honoured. We do not send marketing to an address you only used to sign in unless you said yes to it.
What we look at
We look at your entries only when you ask us to, for example to help with a support problem, and we tell you first. We look at aggregate numbers: how many people subscribed this month, how many free weeks converted. We do not read gratitude journals for interest, train anything on them, or use them to decide what to show you.
Your choices
- Export. Settings has a button that downloads every entry as a file you own.
- Delete your account. Settings has a button for this too. It removes your account and every entry from our servers at once; there is no waiting period and no backup we keep. The entries on your phone stay until you delete the app.
- Sign out. Your entries stay on the phone; the copy on the server stays until you delete the account.
- Unsubscribe from any email with the link at the bottom of it, or by writing to us.
- Ask. You can ask what we hold about you, ask for it corrected, or ask for it deleted, at the address below. We answer every message.
How long we keep it
Your entries and account stay until you delete them. Subscription records stay as long as Apple and RevenueCat keep them, which we do not control. Email addresses on the launch list are deleted when you unsubscribe.
Children
Northern Sky is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, write to us and we will delete it.
This website
The page you are reading is served by GitHub Pages, which, like any web host, sees the IP address of each request. The fonts come from Google Fonts, which sees the same. We count visits with GoatCounter, which stores no cookies and no personal data, only that a page was viewed and roughly where from. If you give us your email address on the front page, it goes into the same database described above, and nothing on this site can read it back.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will say so in the app before the change takes effect, and the date at the top will move. Small wording fixes just update the date.
